German Wall Clock, Ca. 1890

This fine wall clock is a highly decorative piece and a great antique, in very good condition and working order. The clock comes from Germany and is made of solid wood: the panels are mahogany and the turned and carved pieces are beech. It dates from the late 19th century (circa 1890) and has been fully restored; today the clock looks great, with the mahoganys nice reddish color as deep and bright as when the article was made. The wood boasts a fine French polish finish that enhances its veneer and provides the clock with a warm satin glow. The beech columns, carved motives and turned pieces are dyed in a faux mahogany finish that matches perfectly the panels that make up the clocks box.The box shows off a neoclassic design with twin columns flanking the glass door. At the top the clock has a crowning piece adorned with a hand-engraved central motive and a turned wooden sphere. The bottom is also decorated with turned pieces, making up a balanced and harmonious overall. The front door keeps the original glass panel and behind it we can see the nice white enameled-metal face and the brass pendulum bob, also enameled and with a wonderful engraved decoration.This decoration is composed of a female mask at the top and a lot of classic symmetrical designs embellishing the rest of the piece. At its center, a white enamel circle bears the inscription R A in gothic lettering. The clocks face has black Roman numbers and hands, ant its sober simplicity makes a strong contrast with the baroque pendulum bob. On the other hand, the movement is in excellent condition and has been tuned to guarantee the clocks perfect operation. At the back of the movement we can see the serial number 77709 and a shield with a tower inside, both engraved in the metal.The great decorative value of this wall clock is only one of its many attractive features.
