Beautiful Solid Silver Chalice and Paten Set. France, XIX Century

Wonderful chalice and paten set made in France in the 19th century and in amazing condition. The set is completely made of sterling silver and bears hallmarks in all its parts, marks that testify for the quality and origin of the noble metal. The design of both pieces is simple and attractive, with its elegant sturdiness and timeless beauty. The silver is decorated with hand-engraved motives and a great part of its surface has been embellished with a delicate golden shade. The chalice stands on an ample circular base decorated with a fringe with engraved motives. These motives depict grape bunches and fig leaves; these designs are closely related to the celebration of Eucharist. Over the base, the stem is crossed by a main node adorned with a similar but smaller fringe. The cup is also engraved in this way, and at its base we can see some scallop-shaped motives, simple and elegant. The decoration is sober and classy, and together with the beauty of the silver itself turns this chalice into a singularly attractive article. The paten bears a decoration of engraved motives too. In the center we can see the letters IHS, an abbreviation of Jesus Christ, framed by some schematic designs depicting wheat stalks. The stalks symbolize the bread that turns into the Body of Christ, while the chalices grapes are a symbol of the wine that turns into His Blood. As stated before, both the paten and the chalice bear hallmarks in different parts. The chalice also bears a mark under its base with the name of the silversmith that made this set engraved in the metal. The case designed to store both pieces is very antique and stills fulfills its protecting function.
