This stunning sterling silver chalice and paten set is a very attractive piece, with a sober and balanced design and in quite good condition. The set comes from France and was made in the early 20th century. The set is very well preserved; the gilded finish that enhances the silver surfaces beauty is slightly dull in some places, but this does not interfere with the great look of both articles. The chalice is completely made of silver and bears hallmarks in all its parts. The chalices cup bears the following Latin inscription: HIC EST ENIM CALIX SANGUINIS MEI (This is the Chalice of My Blood), a sentence that belongs to the Eucharistic liturgy. It is engraved by hand in perfectly clear and legible capital letters. The base is also decorated with a fine engraved motive, a circular fringe composed of simple symmetrical volutes that can also be seen in the node. These motives create a lovely and stylish decoration that matches perfectly with the pieces design. On the other hand, the paten bears the engraved IHS monogram that identifies Jesus Christ. Both the paten and the chalice bear different hallmarks that testify for the silvers quality and origin. We can see the mark for the French sterling silver (Minerva goddesss profile) and a beautiful silversmiths mark. This mark is diamond-shaped and contains the makers name, A. Renain, a scale and a star. The set can be stored in the case. It is covered by black faux leather outside and bears a red velvet inner lining. It also preserves the original handle, hinges and locks in excellent condition.Measurements: Chalice: Width: 4.9 in / 1.5 cm. Height: 7 in / 18 cm. Weight: 372 g. Paten: Diameter: 6.1 in / 15 cm.
