Lovely antique sterling silver chalice made in France in the late 19th century, in quite good condition and with its paten. Both pieces are made of silver and bear hallmarks that testify for their quality and origin. The chalice looks stylized and elegant; it is decorated with fine hand-engraved neo-gothic motives. The set comes in the original case, covered outside by black faux leather and inside lined in red velvet. Into the cover we can see a label with the name of the shop where the article was acquired: ORNAMENTS DÉGLISE QUILLERY TOURS.The chalice has a conical circular base, discreet and stable. It is embellished with different symbols related to the Christian faith: a crown of thorns, a reed with two crossed whips in front (symbolizing Jesus Christs strength and flexibility before martyrdom) and a Greek cross with lobed ends. The icons are separated by stylized engraved reed. All the decoration is vegetal-inspired, composed of schematic leaves and flowers. The stem has two nodes, the main one and a smaller secondary node. The chalices cup is shaped like a flower: at the base there is a series of symmetrical lance-shaped leaves with small flowers between them. The motives are delicately shadowed with tiny dots that create a subtle and gorgeous decoration. On the other hand, the paten is very simple and just shows an engraved Greek cross in the center as only decoration. The storing case is in good condition outside it shows the logical signs of the trace of time and use, but this detail does not make this magnificent set less attractive.Measurements: Chalice: Width: 4.7 in / 12 cm.
