Antique Silver and Gilded Brass Chalice with Silver Paten. France, XIX Century

Stunning antique ecclesiastic set composed of an elegant and sober silver-and-brass chalice and a sterling silver paten. The set was made in France in the 19th century and comes in an old-time case, perfect to store and protect both pieces. The chalice and the paten boast a classic and stylish design and have survived to our days in excellent condition. The two pieces bear hallmarks that testify for the quality and origin of the sterling silver they are made of. The chalice is made up of a silver cup and a brass foot, while the paten is fully made of sterling silver. The chalices brass foot has an ample base, circular en shape. The bases edge is wide and is decorated with an engraved fringe composed of small regular arches in a clear neo-gothic style. This pattern is repeated all over the piece the base shows a diamond decoration composed of different regular sections, separated by a series of symmetrical leaves that emerge from the central stem. The leaves create a cone that narrows towards the stem. In the stem there are two nodes: the lower one, smaller in size and decorated with simple schematic flowers, and the main node that repeats the bases decorative pattern. Over the main node we can see a brass piece composed of long stylized leaves. These leaves form a sort of flower calyx that supports the cup. The cup is made of sterling silver, gold-plated inside. Close to the edge we can see a diamond-shaped hallmark containing the initials LG. On the other hand, the paten bears a simple Greek cross with rounded ends as the only decoration. It bears its own hallmark too, a mark with the initials BM. The case where these two pieces are stored is made of black faux-leather-covered wood. Inside it is covered of bright orange padded silk. The brass handle, hinges and shutting locks are original. For its discreet beauty and its quality, this chalice and paten set is a piece worthy of a good collection of religious antiques.
