This beautiful article is an antique censer or thurible, an attractive piece of religious handcraft with a stunning evocative power. The censer is more than one hundred years old it was made in the 19th century and remains in great condition. The silver-plated brass it is made of looks shiny and even, and the embossed decorative details look as nice as then they were made. This piece preserves the original chain, rings and accessories designed to carry and use it. The censer that we can see in the photographs is an swinging model, similar to the famous Botafumeiro preserved in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Censers, also callers incense burners, are recipients that make it possible to burn incense during religious ceremonies. The first models date from the Egyptian period, and they were also used in the Jewish and Greco-Roman cultures. The Christian church, especially the Catholic branch, adopted them from the very first times. The censer is carried and moved during the ceremony as part of a purifying ritual. The censer that we can see in the images is a thurible or chain censer, commonly used in Catholic ceremonies. It is composed of two parts: the censer itself, a recipient to burn incense, and the cover with the chains. The recipient has a stable base that makes it possible to put it on a flat surface. The base is decorated with vegetal motives and the cover shows off three lovely masks depicting winged angels busts. The whole piece is connected to a long folded chain that lets the user carry and swing the censer so the aromatic fume can flow. The length of the chains can also be regulated. Any lover of religious handcraft and spiritual rites will find a greatly interesting piece in this antique censer. Measurements: Width: 5.1 in / 13 cm. Height: 11.4 in / 29 cm.
