Antique Solid Silver Crucifixes for Holding the Holy Oils. France, 1819-1838

Delicate and antique set of sterling silver vessels for the Holy Oils, made in France in the early 19th century (between 1819 and 1838) and with hallmarks in different parts. The vessels have their original lids which fit perfectly in the recipients. They are quite well preserved and boast a simple and stylish design: the recipients are cylindrical in shape, with an even surface only interrupted by the initials engraved at the front side. The lids are also lean and even, and are crowned by two simple crosses that can be used to facilitate the opening of the vessels too. The vessels are designed to contain the Holy Oils, consecrated oils used in some Catholic ceremonies. These products are used by the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Catholic churches in different rituals. One of the vessels contains the Sacred Chrism and the other can contain the Oil of the Cathecumens (used in the sacrament of Baptism) or, more commonly, the Oil of the Infirm (for the Sacrament of Anointing the Sick, formerly known as Extreme Unction). The Sacred Chrism is a mixture of olive oil and balm; the oil symbolizes strength, and the soft aroma of the balm is a reminder of Christian life. These fine vessels bear a couple of hand-engraved initials each. These letters correspond to the Holy Oil they contain: O.S. for the Sacred Oleum (Oleum Sanctorun), y S.C. for the Sacred Chrism (Sacrum Chrisma). As stated before, they bear several hallmarks that testify for the silvers quality and origin. The most remarkable one shows a bearded mans profile with number 67: these marks identify French silver made in the provinces, and the number indicates the province the marked piece was made in.
