Valencian Silver Chalice, XIX Century.

Valuable Spanish silver chalice from the second half of the 19th century. It is a fine religious metalwork piece which comes in its original wooden case. The case keeps the original key and, though the trace of time has left its marks on it, it has surely been the responsible of the excellent condition of the chalice and the accessories. The chalice comes with a paten, a small incense spoon and a bell to indicate the moment of the genuflection. Both the paten and the spoon are made of solid silver, while the bell is made of silvery metal. The chalice is completely made of solid silver: the cup, the node and the base. We can see a hallmark stamped in the base with the inscription A. DEVESA V.S.D., which belongs to Agustin Devesa Olmoss atelier. He was a famous silversmith from Valencia (Spain) who was specialized in religious articles. The chalice shows a discreet and sober decoration which covers almost the whole surface of the piece, except for the cup. We can see many floral and abstract motives, with some identifiable signs such as the fleur-de-lis and the Latin cross. The paten is completely flat, with no decoration at all, while the incense spoon is delicately made, and its handle shows Medieval-inspired openwork. The box which houses the chalice and the accessories is made of solid wood, covered by a dark brown varnish. The wood is in good condition though the varnish is somewhat worn, but it can be easily restored by a good professional. The case keeps the original top brass handle and the two shutting hooks. It has an inside pink satin covering with some departments for the accessories. Though is quite worn, it is still fully original. All these details turn this silversmith piece in a real luxurious and antique item, which will stand out in a collection with the best sacred art pieces. Measurements: 135 mm width x 240 mm height.
