Antique Gilt Silver Chalice. France, 19th Century

Antique gold-plated solid-silver chalice made in France in the 19th century, very beautiful and in amazing condition. The chalice comes with an ancient paten, also made of silver; both pieces bear hallmarks that testify for their quality, original and ancient age. The gold-plated finish that covers the chalices surface looks even and uniform, and preserves its original shine and lovely amber color. This piece boasts a medieval-inspired design with simple lines and hand-engraved decoration covering most of its surface. The chalices foot is conical in shape and is entirely engraved by hand. The engraved motifs are composed of slim lines which created pointed arches and gothic traceries. At the front of this part we can see the image of a radiant cross too. The stem over the foot bears an only central node, quite simple and adorned with gothic-style traceries similar to the ones stated before. This ornamentation is also present at the bottom of the cup, creating a wonderful and balanced decoration all over the chalice. Close the foot and cups edges we can see the hallmark which identifies French silver pieces, and the silversmiths mark too: a head of Minerva goddess and a diamond containing the initials BN. On the other hand, the paten also bears its corresponding hallmarks. This piece is made of lean silver and is embellished with a fine hand-engraved motif depicting Jesus Christs acronym (IHS) crowned by a Latin cross and over an image of the Sacred Heart.
