Antique solid-silver chalice and paten, made in France in the early 20th or late 19th century (circa 1900). This set of religious artwork pieces remains in good condition and boasts a stylized and balanced beauty. Both pieces are decorated with hand-engraved motifs and bear hallmarks that testify for their origin, age and manufacture. The chalice is entirely made of lean solid silver, from the foot to the cup. The foot is circular and is embellished with delicate religious symbols, separated by engraved flowers. We can see a bunch of grapes in the vine (symbolizing the Eucharistic wine), a group of reeds (symbol of the People of God) and the Cross. The chalices stem has a main node with the same decoration as the base. In this case, the ornamentation only shows a geometrical decoration composed of simple flowers and leaves. The secondary nodes, smaller in size, are adorned with circles. At the top of the chalice we can see the cup, very stylized and with no decoration at all. Close to the cups edge we can see the French silver hallmark and the silversmiths mark, which can also be found at the chalices foot. The cup has some very slight dents which are only visible under oblique light. These flaws do not interfere at all with the items fine beauty. Last but not least, the paten which comes with the chalice is made of gold-plated silver. It has its own hallmarks and bears a hand-engraved cross too. For its elegant simplicity, this antique chalice and paten set is an amazing piece worthy to belong to a priest with a love for antiques or a good collector.
