Vintage Solid-Silver Chalice and Paten Set. Last Supper. Spain, 20th Century

Vintage solid-silver chalice and paten set with a scene of the Last Supper and made in Spain in the 20th century (circa 1970-80). The chalice hides a counterweighing piece and remains in fine condition. The same can be said about the paten, also made of silver. Both pieces bear hallmarks and are marked with the silver proportion (925). The chalice shows off a short and compact design, boasting an aesthetic which was very popular in Spanish religious decorative arts at the 70s. The pieces surface is entirely engraved with slim parallel lines, creating a texture which looks like the bark of a tree. The chalices foot is conical in shape and bears a simple Chrismon (the monogram of Christ composed of the Greek letters XP) engraved by hand. Between the chalices foot and cup we can see the most remarkable part of this piece. We are talking about the node, decorated with a hand-engraved scene of the Last Supper with the Apostles and Christ praying at the table. The figures faces are impersonal, schematic and almost abstract to the point that they could all be the same person. They all bear the halo of holiness; we can tell who Christ is because His halo is decorated with lines and has a chalice in front of Him. The figures hands are also crossed in different ways. Over the node, the cup bears the same decoration as the chalices foot. Its surface is adorned with a series of slim parallel lines engraved by hand on the metal surface. Near the edge of the cup we can see the silversmiths mark (with the initials SA) and the silver proportion, 925. Inside the cup shows a dazzling gilded finish in wonderful condition. The paten which comes with the chalice is made of silver (gold-plated and lean) and bears an engraved Chrismon too. Near the edge we can see the same hallmarks of the chalice.
