Rare antique polylobed brass pax made in the 19th century (probably in France) and in very good condition. The pax is a liturgical object used in the Catholic Mass for the Kiss of Peace. It was mainly used in Solemn Masses, when direct kissing among the faithful and the celebrants was replaced by they kissing the pax. The item was given to the congregation by the priest and was then carried around those present. The pax which can be seen in the images is a rare piece for its polylobed shape, quite unusual in these pieces. It is decorated with a gorgeous scene of Jesus Christ in the Calvary with Virgin Mary, her sister (Cleopass wife) any Mary Magdalene. The scene stands out for its great facture and shows off a great skill in the metalwork. Around it we can see embossed reeds, wheat stalks and bunches of grapes in the vine, classic symbols of the People of God and the Eucharist. The border that frames the scene is decorated with delicate hand-engraved medieval-inspired motifs, simple and symmetrical. For its great handmade decoration and its ancient age, this pax will shine in any collection of religious art or artistic metal works. Dimensions: Diameter: 6.5 in / 16.5 cm.
