Gorgeous antique gilt-silver chalice with silver medallions, coming from France and made circa 100. This piece is in fine condition and boasts a lovely gilt finish, intense and uniform, original from the time. At the foot and near the cups edge we can see the French silver hallmark and the silversmiths mark too. The base is conical in shape and is divided in six sections. Three of them are adorned with plain silver appliqués containing crucial scenes from the New Testament: the Birth of Jesus, Jesus with the Doctors of Law and the Crucifixion. The appliqués are delicately engraved by hand, with an incredible attention to detail that reveals the hand of a talented artist. Between them we can see hand-engraved wheat stalks, symmetrical and stylized. The geometrical stem has two medieval-inspiration nodes. The main node is shaped as a six-pointed star and the secondary one looks like a hexagon. The cup bears no decoration except for the part where it connects the stem. Here we can see a series of engraved arches and embossed schematic and symmetrical flowers. The chalice comes with a plain and non-decorated paten. As no hallmarks can be seen, it is probably made of gilt metal or low silver. As simple as attractive, this antique gilt-silver chalice with silver medallions is a piece with a timeless beauty, more than one hundred years old.
