Large silver-plated metal crucifix or altar cross made in the 19th century, probably French and with an imposing presence. The crucifix remains in fine condition and is a remarkable piece, almost 27 inches high, which was probably bound to be used as altar cross. It has a rectangular foot with four curved legs, hand-engraved with simple and schematic symmetrical and vegetal motifs. At the front side of the foot we can see a gilt-metal appliqué with the embossed image of the Lamb of God, while the back bears the engraved symbol of God (a radiant triangle). The piece which connects the foot and the cross is decorated with embossed vines and bunches of grapes, and symmetrical scrolls. The crucifix is composed of a simple and straight-lined cross, with the crosspieces trimmed by symmetrical floral motifs. Attached to it we can see a delicate figure of Jesus Christ, fixed with iron nails. The figure is very stylish and is crowned by the classic scroll containing the inscription INRI. Perfect to preside the celebration of mass or as a decorative element, this big silver-plated metal crucifix or altar cross is surely a superb piece. Dimensions: Foot: Width: 6.7 in / 17 cm. Depth: 3.45 in / 9 cm. Height: 26.38 in /67 cm
